A memory foam mattress will give you a luxurious sleeping surface and a great night’s sleep.
To begin, what is memory foam?
This material has come a long way since it was first developed in the 1970s under contract to NASA. The brief was to create a substance that would improve the cushioning of seats as well as provide protection for airline pilots and passengers in the event of a crash.
Memory Foam is made from a polyurethane material sensitive to heat and temperature. When something is pressed into memory foam, it takes the impression of the object, slowly returning to its original shape when removed. This makes it ideal for mattresses as it moulds to the contours of the body.
What is a memory foam mattress?
A memory foam mattress has a layer of memory foam which is placed over the “engine” of the mattress, which could be a spring system or a speciality foam. Some of the ways it’s applied is in the form of a pillowtop or it can be the top layer of foam in the mattress.
The technology in the memory foam mattress has advanced considerably over the years. For example the Blue Extreme Pillow-Top from Cloud Nine has what is called Blue Gel Memory foam. This foam dissipates heat to ensure a cool sleeping surface.
One of the top sellers at Bedworld is the Pocket Premium from our Value Buys range. This range is a selection of beds that are affordable and offer premium quality. The Pocket Premium has a pocketed spring system with a memory foam top layer.
Sleeping on memory foam has been likened to floating on a cloud. The mattress doesn’t exert pressure on the heavier parts of the body – the head, shoulders and hips.
If you would like to add an extra layer of comfort and luxury to your bed, a mattress topper is for you. This is a memory foam layer that fits on top of your bed like a fitted sheet. A mattress topper can also be used to join two single beds into a king size. You will find our mattress toppers here.
